Fic: BBC's Merlin - The Dragon

Title: The Dragon
Author: wild-dreamer
Fandom: BBC's Merlin
Pairing: None.
Words: ~200
Summary: The last words the Great Dragon ever said to Uther Pendragon are also the words that condemned him to chains beneath the castle; they are the only reason the Dragon yet lives.

---

A great rumbling laughter echoed around Uther, and he narrowed his eyes at the magical creature before him.

"This is the eve of your death," he said, the words coming without thought, drawn forth by some itch of wayward curiousity. "What merriment can that possibly bring you?"

The dragon snorted, eyes slitted in what could only be read as amusement, mirth curling through its next words like the hint of smoke through the air from its nostrils. Uther's fingers tightened reflexively on the hilt of his sword, and he forced himself not to take a step back.

"If I die, Uther Pendragon, then so do your son's chances at the crown."

"You lie." Even to his own ears, his voice was sharp with the need to deny it, to refute the certainty in the beast's tone.

"Do you care to test that theory?" the dragon rumbled, eyes narrowing, haughty and proud once more, no longer even a trace of laughter in its voice.

Uther's mouth pressed into a thin line, and after a long moment he snapped his fingers at the waiting knights. "Chain him up in the caverns beneath the castle, in iron chains. And block off the entrance when you're through." He turned on his heel sharply, leaving before he could change his mind.
